In recognition of his many achievements within the logistics industry, Prof. Gustaaf De Monie was inducted into the Institute’s ‘Hall of Fame’, at the Institute’s 6th Annual European dinner in Antwerp in 2011. The induction honoured Professor de Monie’s contribution to the development of “Best Practice” in the global ports sector.

With extensive port industry experience, Prof. De Monie has been involved in research, project execution and training schemes world-wide. He has authored research studies and papers on port planning, management and operations for UNCTAD, UNDP, The World Bank and The European Community.

Gustaaf De Monie graduated in 1965 from the University Antwerp with a degree in Applied Economics and started his professional career with a leading Antwerp Terminal Operator. In 1970 he joined the Ports Section of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development where he was responsible for research, training and project development. In 1989 he established himself as an independent consultant. He is presently acting as an analyst and international adviser on port and shipping matters and works for international organizations such as the World Bank and I.F.C., global terminal operators and port authorities.
Dr. De Monie’s key qualifications include a broad experience in project management, port operations, port reform and performance measurement. He is the author of research numerous studies and papers on port management, operations and container terminal development. He is an organiser of port training programmes and team leader for the implementation of port development and re-structuring projects. He is Programme Advisor to the Le Havre Port Training Institute and Course Coordinator for ‘Terminal Management’ in the ITMMA Master of Science programme of Antwerp University. Last but not least, he is Project Director for ‘Policy Research Corporation’, an Antwerp-based economic think-tank specialising in transport issues.

THE STORY OF GUSTAAF DE MONIE’S CAREER

He has practical port operating experience as operations and commercial manager of Noord Natie terminal operating company in the port of Antwerp since 2003 PSA and as consultant in projects related to the design and development of operational systems for port terminals (containers, multi-purpose and fertilizers). He also has extensive experience in the field of port finance and economics, and has been responsible for the execution of port development and port restructuring projects in developing and industrialized countries around the world.

He has experience in the development and implementation of structured learning packages on port related subjects, such as cargo handling, port pricing, strategic port planning and investment appraisal, port administration, port competition and promotion, and port restructuring.

PROF. DE MONIE’S PRESENTATION ON THE FUTURE OF THE INDUSTRY

He also has organized senior and middle management training programmes in shipping and port management, planning and operations, such as Improving Port Performance (IPP), Port worker Development Programme (PDP), the operation of second generation mobile harbour cranes or the use of multi-unitisation techniques (The World Bank).
Gustaff is an advisor on port management, operations and training to Governments, Shipping Lines and Global Operating Companies, and an advisor on port restructuring for Governments, individual port authorities and private terminal operators, including in Santos in Brazil.
He is Senior Director of Policy Research Corporation N.V., Antwerp, Belgium, and Programme Advisor for the Le Havre Port Training Institute (IPER). Since 2002 Gustaaf has been Coordinator of the ‘Terminal Management’ programme in M.Sc. in Transport and Maritime Management course of the Institute of Transport and Maritime Management (ITMMA) – Antwerp

The award is also to acknowledge his support for the development of the Global Institute of Logistics Container Terminal Quality System (CTQS) In 2006 the Institute approached Dr de Monie and asked him to act as expert adviser to the Container Terminal Quality Committee in its quest to developing a quality system and standard for the industry.
